OUTLINE OF RESEARCH
Broad area of research on reinforced concrete building structures and earthquake resistance of buildings; i.e., experimental study on the behavior of reinforced concrete members to failure; experimental and analytical study on the evaluation of ultimate strength, deformability, restoring force-deformation characteristics and hysteresis behavior of reinforced concrete members; nonlinear earthquake response analysis of reinforced concrete building structures; earthquake resistant design of reinforced concrete buildings; analytical study on the evaluation of dynamic characteristics of strong earthquake motion; and earthquake damage investigation. New structural design concepts based on performance based approach are investigated on several topics including, seismic retrofit and life-cycle repair cost assessment.
A paraticular area of my current interest is to development of a unified theory for R/C beam-column joint. As a chair of the committee of structural performance of precast concrete building construction in AIJ, Architectural Institute of Japan, Dr. Shiohara's research interests and responsibilities extend to include design guidelines of precast concrete joints.
